How long are the LESSONS?

Each lesson varies in length because it depends on you and your dog. In general, they are 1- 2 hours long.

What if I have questions between lessons?

I am happy to take calls, respond to emails, or text messages with any questions you might have. I’ll even review short video clips and provide feedback to specific questions. There is no charge for this as long as it is not excessive.

What EQUIPMENT do I need?

During training sessions we will use a flat buckle, regular collar, a 6 ft leash, and a 12 -15 long line. The leash must be nylon or leather (preferred, especially for larger dogs). The long line can be webbing or biothane materials. Retractable leashes may be used in certain cases. Chain leashes will not be used during training sessions. Other training equipment may be used as needed, based on the dog and your training goals.

Why a leather Leash?

A well-constructed leather leash will last decades. It has natural give and flexibility. Perhaps most importantly, if your dog jumps after that squirrel or another dog, the leather leash will leave your skin where it belongs, on your hands.

We were kicked out of group class. Is that a problem?

It’s not, but clearly you do have a problem. My lessons are private one-on-one lessons. In certain cases, I may schedule to bring one of my dogs to help as we work through specific issues. Often those have to do with things like passing people and dogs on your walk.

Are you A Purely POSITIVE trainer?

I am not. You might consider me a “positive first trainer”. This means I do often use food rewards and positive reinforcement as my starting point. However, I have graduate degrees in education and I understand that there are different and other effective ways to teach that includes more than just positive reinforcement. This includes establishing boundaries and teaching your dog to understand that crossing those is not allowed. Often this is demonstrated with a simple verbal correction of “Uh-uh” or “No” and no food reward or praise.

Do you work with AGGRESSIVE dogs?

It depends. Most dogs who are categorized as “aggressive” really have other issues. Often they are “reactive” not aggressive. And yes, there is difference. During our phone consultation we can discuss what is going on. From there we may schedule an initial in-home meeting for further assessment. If I feel that I cannot work with your dog, I will tell you so upfront and provide a list of other Tallahassee area dog trainers that I feel might be able to assist you.

DO you have lessons anywhere beside my home?

Yes. I am willing to meet you at your vet, local parks, local dog friendly stores, etc. It just depends on what we are working on. The lesson fee is the same.

DO you teach retrieving or hunting?

No, I do not. You would need to locate someone who specializes in gun dog, hunting, upland dog training or the like. What I can help with is teaching your dog how to live in your house, when you aren’t hunting.
